Having started a new job where I had been working 58 hours a week in the building it was good to get some time off and the opportunity arose to get on the guest list for the stone sour gig at the birmingham arena which I jumped at to get some R&R as well as do something with my time off.

The opening act were the pretty reckless who I had not had the opportunity to hear before, so I was pleasantly suprised by the act coming out strong with some good tunes, the act did start with what can only be described as the lead singer’s sex noises climbing to climax before they came on, and the sexualisation continued in the music and the singers actions on the stage but this lead to a heated performance which the audience loved.

The music continued to be varied and keep up the pace which many of the warm up acts I’ve experienced before in the years of gig’s I’ve worked at often fail to maintain especially when coming out strong but these guys managed to do it and warm up the audience immediately.

When stone sour themselves came on stage they came out just as strong keeping the audience entertained without too long of a wait between setup. They played newer songs followed by some of the old favourites all of the crowd new encouraging people to join in singing along.

The usual crowd shennanigans were going on from the crush at the front to people trying to start up moshpits, albeit right next to the front which of course failed because it’s impossible to start a pit in the middle of the crush. I pointed out to those attempting to do so they’d have better luck doing so further back so they headed back and of course were successful in making one causing a wave of people to wash past. In the past I have allowed myself to be carried by the crowd however after an incident at download festival I now hold myself steady and unmoving when these waves pass and attempt to stop it entirely. The incident I speak of is when I was at the front crush maybe 3 rows from the front and a large fast wave hit suddenly knocking everyone sideways so much so that people were struggling to stay upright and this lead to me and another girl ending up on the floor under the crowd, where I was being pulled up by a guy on my left but I held out my hand to the girl on the floor as she said “don’t let go” after we were both stuck under the crush of the crowd unable to stand up. I could have allowed myself to be picked up but I wasn’t going to leave her on the floor, however as I was refusing to get up without pulling her upright the crowd lifted me vertically and crowd surfed me over the front barrier and I couldn’t hold on to her hand during all of that and I don’t know if she ever got back up, I do know she was never lifted out the front as she didn’t come over the barrier and the medics couldn’t see if she got lifted out. I did also hear after the festival that year that someone died trampled under the crowd so it does stick with me that perhaps I could have done more especially if I hadn’t let the crowd push me and as a result knock me and her down under everyone so I vowed never to let that happen again, so when someone says I ruin all the fun not allowing myself and others to get knocked down by the wave of crowd then they need to look at their idea of fun, because running people down with a motor vehicle might be just as fun to them but surely going to result in injury or death and not exactly enjoyable to those getting plowed down.

The show continued with an encore resulting in wild wacky wavy arm inflatables being deployed, perhaps upstaging the band when they were fighting for attention and slapping them in the face every time they tied to get up front and center, but it made part of the show just the same.

All in all they put on a good show and it is definitely recommended if you get the chance on the upcoming tour to go see either pretty reckless or stone sour while they are on tour.

With the festive season coming soon you might be wandering what to buy for those close to you and where to go where you won’t see the same old chain stores with the generic products you see every year, maybe this year you’re looking for something a little more meaningful and origonal. Sure you can look online but where would you begin with that, and then you have postage costs to pay on top of that from every different place you see.

What if there was a place where you could see a variety of different products, unusual, specialised, more thoughtful? All under one location, and not only that have a good time in a festive themed environment and really get into the xmas spirit?

The festive gift fair in birmingham may be exactly what you are looking for, promising over 325 different exhibits with shops ranging from well known brands to lesser known and varied gifts, festive food stalls to sample and a selection of entertainment and music (which I would presume to be merry jingles, possibly even xmas kareoke which would be fun, but I couldn’t tell you besides music being promised along side other entertainment) There is plenty on offer to entice you to visit, and the best part is you don’t have to pay shipping for your items.

Key Points

  • Entry will vary between £8.50-£9.50 when booked in advance
  • Open between 9:30 and 5pm from the 21st to the 24th of November (ideal to start the xmas season)
  • “wonderful, unusual and affordable presents”
  • Festive theme and entertainment
  • Eat drink and be merry with festive food and drink to sample and purchase
  • Santa will greet you when you arrive, so yes he has taken time off to come to this event because this will be where xmas begins in birmingham.

I have been provided press access to the event so I will be able to provide a much more in depth review showing the highlights and hidden gems of the event, along with photo’s and video’s from the location to give you an idea what is happening at the event, along with my personal favourites and recommendations as to what to visit and special gift idea’s from the merchants of the event.

I personally think birmingham should advertise this event more as it offers a wider selection than the german food market which takes up the streets in the city center, and beyond that is actually festive and will get people in the christmas spirit ready for the spirit, exploring a whole kingdom of festive stalls and would make a great day out for the family, and not only this it will be a great place to escape the high street and to explore new idea’s and gifts you might not have seen or considered.

If you are interested in seeing it all close up yourself I would recommend you purchase a ticket, available now from http://www.festivegiftfair.co.uk/

Specifically at circus casino hurst street, birmingham city center.

All you have to do is wait for someone to sit at the table, place your chips in front of them so that youve “taken” that position. then once theyve purchased thier chips theyll think especially if youve sat right on the end that if you place your chips first on the spot infront of you thats your spot right? Wrong even if youve placed your chips, and the dealer saw you and didnt say a thing, and the other person places thier chips on top of yours, win or lose its thier box and nothing you can do about it, even if its obvious that it should be your box from where youre sat, the casino dont care in the slightest.

Soooo feel free to steal whoevers chips you like in the casino. They wont care and will do nothing to put things right.

Okay first trip to a proper official casino, at the entrance desk, they play music like on rpg games so its like youre entering a game world rather than an official place to gamble.

On the food side of the casino, as its in the chinatown part of birmingham its clever that they decided to make chinese food the full menu. The food was a little overpriced, but still good. The rice comes on a plate with enough to share with 2 people, of course every other circus casino has different foods. I would have rather ate at one of the other casinos as chinese food doesnt really fill me up well.

Another downside is that they had a set menu 3 courses for £10 but they wouldnt allow me to order off that even though they gave me that menu to choose from, and had a single course with rice for £10. No explaination was given as to why I wasnt allowed to order, would have been nice to have been told why.

Remember at all times only ever gamble with what you can afford to lose, as the games are already in the houses favour before other people are allowed to steal from you with no recourse.

Okay had to wake up really early to get to work one morning, and I heard a bin lorry reversing in birmingham (whats so special about that I hear you ask)… okay so maybe not… anyway it just amused me that the lorry said “warning this vehicle is reversing, but not only that it was in a birmingham twang so that when it said reversing it sounded a bit confused like it was asking a question…

Warning this vehicle is, reversing? Amused me, mightve been because I was still tired that early in the morning but hey.
